Equestrian: Bahamas’ top scholar

The winner of the 2021 All Bahamas Merit Scholarship, the nation’s most prestigious scholarship, is Maya Tilberg, accomplished equestrian competitor.

The equestrian sports community joined the board of directors and executive officers of Equestrian Bahamas to congratulate Maya Tilberg on winning the scholarship. The award came in recognition of her 10 A’s in the BGCSE examinations, her earning the Valedictorian honor of St. Augustine’s College with a 3.99 GPA, and for achieving the Mark Twain Scholarship, which brought her a spot in the Honors College at the University of Missouri. Currently she has declared a Biological Science major with Pre-Med focus.

“Maya is also an outstanding equestrian athlete, a three-time Bahamas Junior Jumper Champion who also successfully represented The Bahamas in equestrian team competition,” Equestrian Bahamas said in a press release. “Maya started classes in person this past Monday and is settling in well so far. Her only disappointment was in learning that the University of Missouri does not have an equestrian team.”

Equestrian Bahamas confirmed that Maya plans to pursue volunteer opportunities at the university’s veterinary program’s large animal facility.

Bahamas Olympic Committee President, Romell Knowles, added congratulations on behalf of the BOC’s executive officers and all BOC federations.

“Ms. Tilberg is a shining example of what the Bahamian athlete has to offer,” he said. “We have athletes who excel in many ways all around the world. She is what we always hope for in our athletes – that they would be well-rounded people, who exhibit not only athletic skill, but also sound minds and strength of character.”

Maya has also volunteered in the past as a mentor to junior equestrians. She is the daughter of Todd Tilberg and Tanya Mortemore.

All-Bahamas Merit Scholarship Winner Maya Tilberg will attend the University of Missouri as a Biological Science Major with a Pre-Med focus.
